The Social Emotional Counselor supports students in overcoming social, emotional, and mental health challenges that may interfere with their academic success and personal development. Working within a dropout prevention, credit recovery setting, the counselor plays a vital role in fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that helps students re-engage with school and reach their goals.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide individual and group counseling focused on social-emotional skills, resilience, motivation, and goal setting/achievement.
• Act as the district McKinney-Vento Liaison for the school, overseeing support for students experiencing homelessness.
• Maintaining and ensure compliance with MKV students and conduct monthly check-ins with students labeled as MKV to promote engagement, attendance, and gauge what support is needed.
• Assess students' social and emotional needs through observation, interviews, and relevant tools.
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and external mental health providers to support student well-being.
• Develop and implement strategies to improve attendance, behavior, and engagement among at-risk youth.
• Support crisis intervention and provide referrals to community-based mental health services when needed.
• Facilitate restorative practices, SEL curriculum, and trauma-informed practices within the school setting.
• Monitor student progress, maintain confidential records, and document interventions in accordance with school policy.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings (IEP, 504, MTSS) as needed.
• Promote a positive school climate and build trusting relationships with students and families.
• Meets ethical and professional responsibilities with integrity and honesty. The teacher models and upholds district policies and state and federal regulations.
Required Qualifications
• Valid state licensure (LSW, LPC, LPCC, LISW, or School Counselor License)
• Strong knowledge of trauma-informed care, SEL frameworks, and restorative practices
• Experience working with at-risk or alternative school populations preferred
Preferred Qualifications (optional)
• Master’s degree in School Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field required.
• Experience in McKinney-Vento support.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced, virtual environment.
• Passion for working with students who face significant academic and personal barriers.
• Culturally responsive mindset and commitment to equity.
• Creative problem-solver with strong organizational skills.
• Basic computer and technological skills including the Office Suite.
• Maintain good attendance and punctuality.
•Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
