Position Summary

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SSBS) at National University seeks applications for a 9-month Postdoctoral Fellow in either the Department of Marriage Family Sciences (DMFS). Fellows will have the opportunity to teach and learn in an online environment within a proven and evolving educational model.

Postdoctoral Fellows in the SSBS teach graduate courses within a programmatic core discipline as assigned. Primary responsibility is to engage students, offer excellent feedback, and inspire students to achieve course and program outcomes relevant to the core discipline. Postdoctoral Fellows also come into the position with a proposal for professional scholarship and growth opportunities they want to pursue during the experience. This position works closely with other faculty teaching in the discipline, Associate Director of Faculty Support and Development, Department Chair, and Dean.

Essential Functions:

The role of Postdoctoral Fellow may include teaching courses within a programmatic core discipline as assigned. In addition, the following points will be discussed as part of the hiring process:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to NU’s vision, mission, and goals and those of the School of Social Behavioral Sciences.
  • Promote a graduate culture of scholarship, teaching, service, and practice.
  • Demonstrate commitment to and capacity for Teaching through Engagement and using the NU One-to-One, apprenticeship style teaching model.
  • Participate in research and scholarship opportunities congruent with teaching load and Department expectations.
  • Pursue opportunities for service to the profession as appropriate.
  • Engage in relevant professional practice activities congruent with teaching load and Department expectations.
  • Teach masters and/or doctoral courses in the DMFS.
  • Participate in initial and ongoing training.
  • Participate in trial use of new technologies and integrates new technologies into their teaching.
  • Participate in school-specific and university postdoctoral networking meetings.
  • Maintain contact with students via phone, video conferencing, and email through their courses.
  • Work collaboratively with Academic and Finance Advisors to ensure student engagement and success.
  • Exercise academic freedom in teaching course content and achieving learning outcomes in accordance with University policy, procedures, and curricula.
  • Participate in program and student assessment procedures.
  • Perform all educational services in accordance with NU policies and procedures, the Family Education Rights to Privacy Act, National University’s Code of Conduct and all other state and federal laws.
  • Tasks and projects as assigned by the Dean or NU administrators.
  • Reasonable and consistent attendance to fulfill requirements of the position.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution with academic qualifications in an area aligned with the mission and offerings of the Department of Marriage and Family Sciences required.
  • Experience teaching, working with, and mentoring diverse students strongly preferred.
  • Experience in graduate level coursework and clinical training preferred.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology in the delivery of education and online teaching experience are preferred.
  • Curriculum development experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred.
  • Professional identity as a couple/marriage and family therapist
  • Graduation from a COAMFTE accredited program strongly preferred.
  • AAMFT Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor desirable.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in operating equipment, such as personal computer, fax, copier, phone systems.
  • Ability to handle a diversity of details to make informed and responsive decisions on matters that impact the adjunct faculty, and students.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governing body regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a proven ability to provide timely, accurate information on a variety of academically oriented subjects to both internal and external constituents.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and other applications in the Microsoft Office suite.
