UMass Global full-time faculty are responsible for teaching (including course development), mentoring, and contributing to university service. While research activities are supported, they are not mandatory. Faculty positions are non-tenure track, with most hires starting at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking an innovative and dedicated full-time faculty member to join our School of Education faculty. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in PK-12 special education, experience with online teaching, and a commitment to fostering student success. This position encompasses teaching, course development, mentoring, and service to the department and institution.

This non-tenure 12-month position includes shared responsibilities for teaching, course development, mentoring students, and contributing to the service and advancement of the Special Education program. The role requires a collaborative, innovative approach to delivering high-quality, fully online education while supporting student success and fostering program growth. Location of residence may be anywhere in the United States. 12-month faculty position accrues vacation at a bi-weekly rate of 6.15 hours.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching (60%)

• Function as the Special Education Program Chair for all special education programs to coordinate all special education programs, including admissions, advisement, coursework, fieldwork, and assessment of candidates.

Teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in Special Education in a fully online format.

• Develop, revise, and maintain high-quality online programs and courses that align with accreditation standards and best practices in online learning.

• Collaboration with the Center for Instructional Innovation (CII) department to develop engaging curriculum that meets Quality Matters standards.

• Employ inclusive teaching strategies that address diverse learning needs and promote equitable student outcomes that encompass collaboration with the multiple, single and bilingual education programs.

• Use technology effectively to engage students in a virtual learning environment.

• Demonstrate a commitment to adhering to and supporting student disability accommodations, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and university policies.

• Design and monitor the scope and sequence of clinical practice across the arc of the special education programs. Including collaboration with credentials and clinical practice directors.

• Monitor and address program data, student opinion surveys, and course data for continuous program improvement.

• Manage teach out programs.

Mentoring (20%)

• Provide academic and career guidance to students, fostering their development as educators and leaders in Special Education.

• Mentor and advise students pursuing degrees and credentials in special education, guiding them through their academic and professional development.

• Monitor student success, persistence, retention, and completion across the arc of the programs.

• Support, mentor, and monitor adjuncts.

• Supervise student research projects, capstone courses, or fieldwork experiences as applicable.

• Offer support to students navigating challenges in a fully online learning environment.

Service (20%)

• Participate actively in departmental, college, and university committees.

• Demonstrate a commitment to adhering to and supporting student disability accommodations, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and university policies.

• Engage and contribute to clinical practice initiatives, monitoring, supporting supervisors, CalTPA Special Education Lead, tracking assessment data, and remediation.

• Contribute to program development, assessment, and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Collaborate with colleagues to support accreditation efforts and maintain compliance with state and federal standards for teacher preparation programs.

• Participate in outreach activities, enhancing the institution’s connection with the broader community.

• Engage in scholarly or creative activities relevant to Special Education and online education, staying abreast of developments in the field and CTC program standards.

• Participate in university committees, contribute to accreditation processes, and engage with the broader educational community.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Master's degree in special education or closely related field.

• A minimum of three years of experience teaching in Special Education, either in K-12 or higher education in the past 10 years.

• SPED clinical practice leadership experience

• Active or seeking California state teaching certification in Special Education credential areas

• Experience teaching in an online or hybrid environment, with proficiency in learning management systems (e.g., Brightspace, Blackboard).

• Demonstrated commitment to cultural competence in education.

• Familiarity with accreditation processes for education programs (e.g., AAQEP, CAEP, CEC, CTC).

Preferred:

• Doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

• Experience developing and maintaining online courses using instructional design principles.

• A track record of scholarly work, professional presentations, or contributions to the field of Special Education.

• Prior experience in collaborating with stakeholders in community-based employer organizations.

• Demonstrated experience working with non-traditional students.

• Effective record of innovation integrating curriculum and practice with appropriate technologies.

• Knowledge of UMass Global policies and procedures.

Salary:

Offers are determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to; geographical location, knowledge, skills, and experience. The posted typical starting UMass Global academic salary range establishes the minimum pay based on rank at the time of appointment. This ensures that all compensation decisions align with competitive market conditions and the individual's qualifications.

Typical Starting UMass Global Academic salary range:

• Assistant Professor: $66,725 - $72,000

• Associate Professor: $83,300 – $85,000

• Professor: $91,900 - $93,000
