Thank you Mamba for Helping Me to Start Teaching Online
Way back in 2016, I started teaching online. That is the same year Kobe Bryant retired from the NBA after 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Late one night, I was scrolling through my Facebook feed when I saw a sponsored advertisement for VIPKid (the “Orange” company). Of course, my first thoughts were is this legit? Can I really teach children on the other side of the world on my computer? It's funny to think that now!
It only took me five minutes to decide to invest in VIPKID.
I did some research which consisted of watching teacher reviews and tips on YouTube. There were maybe 5 teacher created videos at the time. Ultimately, I learned that Kobe Bryant (Bryant Stibel) was an investor of VIPKid, and right away I knew I had to give it a try! (Also, shout to Victoria Love, the teacher who solidified my decision to apply.) I taught my first class with the Orange company on September 11 and was with the company until late 2020. They shut down services in China a year later.
If it were not for Kobe Bryant, I do not think I would not have began teaching online. Since then I have taught online for numerous companies and schools including ESL, Montessori, and K-12.
It was in 2018, one of my classmates in my master’s program said, “I don’t want to teach for VipKids! I want to teach adults.” That’s when the light bulb went off! I thought to myself and immediately opened the Notes app and typed "ESL search engine" which gave me the idea of starting a job board. Fast forward to today to Online Education Jobs and I still keep that Mamba Mentality.
