Guarding Your Career: Avoid the Remote Work Scams
Remote work has opened amazing opportunities for people around the world. From flexible schedules to global job opportunities (hey digital nomads!), working online can improve both career growth and work-life balance. But as remote jobs become more popular, scams targeting job seekers are also increasing.
Finding a legit work-from-home gig shouldn't feel like navigating a minefield. Here is how to keep your personal info safe and your career on the right track.
Always research the company carefully.
- Check their website and social media accounts:Β There should be a location of the company. What type of information is listed on their website? When was the late time their social media accounts were updated?Β
- Check and their email account: An email account typically will be something such as, hr@companyname.com and not a Gmail or Yahoo account. When was the late time their social media accounts was updated?
At Online Education Jobs, we vet each job listing to make sure the job listings are legitimate. If you encounter any of the following, proceed with extreme caution:
-
Too Good to Be True: Scammers often use unrealistically high salaries to make fake jobs seem more believable and tempting. Before applying, take time to research the company.
- Beware of phishing scams that often send fake job offers to educational institution emails for students and staff.
- The "Pay to Play": Scammers often claim you need to pay before starting work. Once payment is sent, they disappear. If a company asks for money before hiring you, treat it as a major red flag!
-
Protect Your Personal Information: Never send sensitive information too early in the hiring process.Β Scammers may use fake job offers to steal identities or access financial accounts.
- Exclude your full address in your resume, always. Just list your city and state.
- Never send bank information before being officially hired and be sure the payroll website is legit.
- Never share your social security number (SSN) in emails ever! It should only be listed on official employment paperwork such as aΒ Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.
- Only provide official documents such as your driver's license, birth certificate, SSN, etc. after verifying the employer and signing legitimate employment paperwork.
- Trust Your Instincts: If something feels suspicious, pause and investigate further. It is better to miss one opportunity than become a victim of fraud.
Remote work can be exciting and legitimate when approached carefully. Staying informed, researching employers, and recognizing warning signs can help you avoid scams and build a safer online career.
A little caution can save you from financial loss and unnecessary stress while finding the right remote work opportunity.
