  • The role of a Dissertation Committee Member is to work with the Dissertation Committee Chair to provide timely and thorough guidance to a student on various elements necessary for the planning and execution of a dissertation study. Dissertation Committee Members interact with the student based on the direction of the Chair. They are expected to support the student research through their specialized knowledge of content or expertise in research methods or statistics.

The Dissertation Committee Chair member is expected to:

EDOL 791, Dissertation I

  • Meet with the Dissertation Committee Chair prior to the student's first meeting to review roles and responsibilities and confirm research direction and committee agreements.
  • Be available to meet with students by phone, Zoom, email, and in person.
  • Review student drafts using the same review protocol or process for providing feedback as the Chair.
  • Apply the Dissertation Rubric to evaluate the student's research and writing quality.
  • Participate in the Formal Proposal Defense conducted to review Chapters I to III.

EDOL 792, Dissertation II

  • Assist the Chair and student with preparing the IRB application as requested.
  • Assist the Chair and student in data collection processes as appropriate.
  • Provide feedback concerning an analysis of Chapter IV data.
  • Provide technical assistance in the development of Chapter V.
  • Provide review and feedback of findings and conclusions presented in Chapter V.
  • Provide feedback concerning recommended actions and future research.
  • Participate in the Oral Defense.
  • Committee Members are not required to travel to be present at the oral defense. It is the Committee Member’s choice to conduct the oral defense through Zoom or to travel at their own expense.
  • Provide assistance in other matters pertaining to Chapters IV-V as directed by the Chair.
  • Providing professional assistance and mentoring as appropriate.
